Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Watch 8: what Samsung showed at Unpacked 2025
Verdict in brief
With the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung catches up on design: slim, light and with a 200-megapixel camera. In return, S Pen support and a bigger battery are missing. Jen considers the Z Flip 7 FE the most unnecessary smartphone of the year, while the Galaxy Watch 8 brings exciting health features.
Pros
- Galaxy Z Fold 7 at just 4.2 mm (unfolded) and 215 g
- 200-megapixel main camera in the Z Fold 7
- Z Flip 7 with a large cover display without cutouts and Gemini Live
- Galaxy Watch 8 with 3,000 nits and new health features
Cons
- No more S Pen support on the Z Fold 7
- At 4,400 mAh, a comparatively small battery in the Z Fold 7
- Z Fold 7 costs €100 more than its predecessor
- Exynos 2500 instead of Snapdragon in the Z Flip 7
- According to Jen, the Z Flip 7 FE is little more than a Z Flip 6 with an older Exynos
At Galaxy Unpacked 2025, Samsung presented three new foldables and two new smartwatches. For me it was an emotional rollercoaster between tears of joy and disappointment. Here are the new products one by one.
Galaxy Z Fold 7: slim and light, but without the S Pen
In its seventh generation, Samsung has finally managed to build a sensible form factor and make the device slim and light. The outside has a decent 21:9 format, and the inside a large 8-inch display.
| Galaxy Z Fold 6 | Galaxy Z Fold 7 | |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness unfolded | 5.6 mm | 4.2 mm |
| Thickness folded | 12.1 mm | 8.9 mm |
| Weight | 215 g (24 g less) |
Samsung calls the Z Fold 7 the thinnest foldable on the market. That may be true for a very short time, because the Honor Magic V5 is 0.1 mm thinner unfolded and 0.2 mm thinner folded. In everyday use you will probably not notice this difference. At 215 g, though, the Z Fold 7 is 2 g lighter than the slimmest version of the Honor Magic V5.
Other new features:
- Main camera: the 200-megapixel sensor from the Galaxy S25 Ultra, plus a 12-megapixel ultra-wide and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.
- Inner display camera: The under-display camera is gone, and in its place there is a 10-megapixel punch-hole camera. You can live with that.
- Processor: Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy.
- New AI features: In photo editing, Galaxy AI suggests which distracting people or objects could be removed. In games, you can start Circle to Search directly.
The bad news: the S Pen is no longer supported on the Z Fold 7. It was never included in the box anyway, but now it cannot be used anywhere. No taking notes, no drawing, no signing documents. That was taken from us so that the device can be so slim.
Samsung also continues to rely on a lithium-ion battery with just 4,400 mAh. Honor uses silicon-carbon batteries and gets 5,820 mAh with only a 2 g difference in weight and the same thickness. Samsung has caught up on design, but on the battery it has missed the boat again.
For this, Samsung charges €100 more than for its predecessor: the smallest version with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB costs €2,099.
Galaxy Z Flip 7: big cover display, but Exynos
The design of the Z Flip 7 has been optimized as well:
- Inner display: 6.9 inches in 21:9 format, making it a bit wider than the Galaxy S25 Plus.
- Cover display: grows from 3.4 to 4.1 inches and now goes completely around the cameras, as on the competition. It has 120 Hz and reaches up to 2,600 nits.
- Display bezels: at 1.25 mm, the thinnest on a flip phone according to Samsung.
- Hinge: supposed to be 30% slimmer.
- Battery: 4,300 mAh, 300 mAh more than its predecessor. Samsung promises up to 8 hours longer battery life, which I still have to check.
- Camera: 50-megapixel wide-angle with 2x optical zoom and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, still no telephoto camera. The inner camera has 10 megapixels, and I prefer to use the main camera with the cover display.
I find it interesting that Galaxy AI and Gemini Live run on the cover display. You stand the unfolded Z Flip 7 up, activate Gemini Live, and can ask questions hands-free, for example which clothes to combine.
The catch is the processor: instead of the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, the device has Samsung’s own Exynos 2500. Samsung had just removed it from the Galaxy S series, only to bring it back here. Personally I have never really had bad experiences with current Exynos processors, but I know they divide opinions worldwide. The US will probably get the Snapdragon again.
The Z Flip 7 costs €1,199 with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB, exactly the same as its predecessor.
Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE: the most unnecessary smartphone of the year
The Z Flip 7 FE gets my title for the most unnecessary smartphone of the year. At its core it is last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 6, just with the Exynos 2400 from the S24 series. It costs €999 with 8 GB of RAM. If you want to save money, you are better off buying the Z Flip 6 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. If you can spend €200 more, take the Z Flip 7.
Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic
Alongside the standard Watch 8, there is a Classic version for the first time. Both have a new design: a rather angular case with a round display, as you know it from the Galaxy Watch Ultra. For everyone who cannot decide between angular and round, you now get both in one watch.
- Case: At 8.6 mm, the Watch 8 is one of the slimmest smartwatches. Thanks to the quick-release strap, it sits better on the wrist, which also helps the sensors.
- Display and battery: 3,000 nits, 50% brighter than its predecessor, and an 8% larger battery. I suspect that it will not last a whole day longer because of that.
- Sleep: a certified sleep apnea measurement via the blood oxygen measurement and a new sleep coach. Based on your energy values and the wake-up time you set, it recommends when you should go to bed.
- Running coach: After a 12-minute run analysis, it creates an individual training plan based on your goals, for example 5 km in a certain time in four weeks.
- Other measurements: vascular load and a new antioxidant index that gives hints about nutrition. For this you have to take the watch off and hold your thumb on the sensor.
- Gemini: comes to the Galaxy Watch 8, on the LTE version even without a smartphone.
With that, Samsung covers sleep, exercise and nutrition. I have decided to follow the Watch 8’s recommendations completely for a while and see what changes.
The Galaxy Watch Ultra remains unchanged and additionally comes in blue with 64 GB of storage. There is no new version of the Galaxy Ring, just new sizes. I had hoped for an update here, especially for the battery.
| Model | Bluetooth | LTE |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch 8, 40 mm | €379 | €429 |
| Galaxy Watch 8, 44 mm | €409 | €459 |
| Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, 46 mm | €529 | €579 |
Verdict
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is finally competitive on design, but loses the S Pen and still has the small battery. The Z Flip 7 brings a big cover display, but with Exynos. In my view, the Z Flip 7 FE is superfluous. The Galaxy Watch 8 brings exciting health features. I am looking forward to testing the new devices.
