Verdict in brief

After a year with the Z Flip4 and Z Fold4, Jen wants a much bigger cover display from the Flip5 and, from the Fold5, the faster processor of the S23 Ultra, a better camera, less weight and a wider shape. Maybe one of them will be a new daily driver.

Pros

  • Z Fold4: two devices in one, a smartphone on the outside and a tablet when unfolded
  • Z Fold4 with S Pen is brilliant, in Jen's view
  • Z Flip4: very handy and light

Cons

  • Z Flip4 always has to be unfolded, for calls and messages, for example
  • Z Fold4 feels slow and has a dated camera compared with the S23 Ultra
  • Z Fold4: typing on the narrow keyboard is a challenge
  • Z Fold4 is a heavyweight

A year ago, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Flip4 and the Z Fold4, and in exactly one week, on July 26, 2023, the Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 will probably be introduced. Time for a look back at the past year and for my wishes for the new devices.

The year with the Galaxy Z Flip4

I bought the Z Flip4 last year and had problems with it: it kept switching itself off and restarting, and I had to send it back. The replacement unit was flawless, and I was happy with the handy, light device. But I didn’t enjoy using it, because I always had to unfold it to look at something, take a call or reply to a message. I’ll be honest: I’m too lazy for that.

Now there are rumors that the Z Flip5 will get a much bigger, 4.3-inch cover display. I sincerely hope that’s true, because then it’s my device. With the cover display, you should then be able to reply to messages or emails or open most apps without unfolding the device.

The year with the Galaxy Z Fold4

In the fall, the Z Fold4 replaced the Z Flip4 as my daily driver, and I still love it today. It’s so cool to have two devices in one: a normal smartphone on the outside, a tablet when unfolded. With the S Pen, the device is brilliant.

In February 2023, the S23 Ultra arrived. With its camera and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, it’s the fastest smartphone I’ve ever held. After that, it was hard for me to go back to the Z Fold4, it felt almost too slow and the camera dated. So the Z Fold4 became my second device for when I’m on the go and want a bigger display.

My wishes for the Z Fold5

  • The processor of the S23 Ultra and an improved camera, maybe even the S23 Ultra’s camera.
  • A bit wider, and for all I care a bit shorter. Typing on the narrow keyboard is a challenge and led to me no longer using the Z Fold4 as my daily driver.
  • Less weight, the Z Fold4 is a heavyweight. Or a way to integrate the S Pen, for all I care magnetically on the outside like with the tablets. Then I’d accept the same weight.

I’m curious and a little excited about what the new devices will look like and what new features Samsung will bring. I have a quiet suspicion that my new daily driver might be among them.
