Amazfit GTS 4: review of the smartwatch with 7 days of battery
Verdict in brief
For a recommended retail price (RRP) of €199, the Amazfit GTS 4 offers lots of features and up to seven days of battery life. Jen gives a clear buying recommendation. Updates are supposed to fix the bugs with the alarm and calls.
Pros
- Premium metal case with a stainless steel crown and a 1.75-inch AMOLED display
- Battery lasts about a week
- Counts reps during strength training
- Treadmill measurement of distance and speed is very accurate
- Pairs with Android and iOS, €100 cheaper than the smallest Galaxy Watch 5
Cons
- All features are switched off out of the box and have to be enabled one by one
- Phone calls could not be set up for Jen
- The alarm went off during the day and once at night despite being set to "Off"
- Alexa is preinstalled and cannot be replaced
- No preview image when triggering the camera remotely
The Amazfit GTS 3 already impressed me with its slim design, and the GTS 4 is every bit as good. Amazfit provided me with the watch for the test, and according to the description the manufacturer had no influence on my assessment or the content.
Design and display
The GTS 4 comes in black and in a nice gold tone, each with a choice of straps. The case is metal and the crown is stainless steel, which looks very premium. The crown navigates through the menu. If you hold it down, it starts a freely assignable function, which for me is workouts.
The display is a 1.75-inch HD AMOLED with adaptive brightness. It gets bright in direct sunlight and is easy to read. More than 150 watch faces with always-on display are available. Some of the complications can be tapped. That was my biggest criticism of the GTS 3.
Health, sleep and training
- 24-hour monitoring: heart rate, blood oxygen saturation and stress level. The one-tap measurement shows three health values and the breathing rate at once.
- Battery: One week. I use automatic workout detection for walks, track the gym two to three times a week, and also wear the watch at night.
- Sleep: The sleep stages are shown. About ten minutes after waking up, a good morning notification arrives with sleep, weather and appointments. I look at it every morning.
- Sports: Over 150 sports. On the treadmill, the measurement of distance and speed is almost identical to the treadmill itself. After a workout there is a summary with intensity zones and recovery time.
- Strength training: The GTS 4 detects and counts individual reps, for example on crunches or the leg press. That blew me away, I have not seen anything like it on any other smartwatch. It does not detect hip abductor training, so it is not quite mature yet.
- PAI: The Personal Activity Intelligence index awards points for activities that benefit the cardiovascular system.
Operation and smart features
Out of the box, all sorts of things are switched off. Notifications, calls and automatic workout detection have to be enabled one by one. That is not ideal, because at first you do not know what is available.
- Pairing: Possible with Apple and Android.
- Phone calls: Possible in principle, but I could not set it up, because the watch counted as not connected despite the Bluetooth pairing. I am hoping for an update.
- Camera remote shutter: New compared to the GTS 3 and very fast. But there is no preview image like on the Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch.
- Vibration: Dull and pleasant, I let it wake me in the morning. However, the alarm went off several times during the day even though I had pressed “Off”, and once in the middle of the night. I do not know the cause.
- Voice assistant: Alexa is preinstalled and cannot be replaced. When you raise your wrist, the watch sometimes listens briefly, which you can tell by three blue dots. Then, for example, the timer works very well.
- App: It has been reworked since the GTS 3 test and is clearly laid out. Real-time navigation is supposed to arrive via an update.
Price
The RRP of €199 is a lot of money, but you get a lot of smartwatch. The GTS 4 is €100 cheaper than the smallest Galaxy Watch 5. That one lasts at most a day and a half to two days because of Google Wear OS, which annoys me. As an average user, I have everything I need on a smartwatch on the GTS 4, plus seven days of battery.
Verdict
I give the GTS 4 a clear buying recommendation.
