Blindfold test: Apple fans guess Xiaomi devices
Verdict in brief
All my friends were surprised by what Xiaomi makes and by how good the value for money is on some devices. It made me smile that Apple users automatically guess every smartphone costs at least €1,000.

In the second part of my Xiaomi smart home vlog, I invited five of my closest friends over for dinner. It was a wonderful evening, but not just because of the food. We played a little game: my friends, all of them Apple fans, were blindfolded and had to feel their way through eight Xiaomi devices. Then they took off the blindfold, looked at the devices and guessed the price. The first part of the smart home vlog showed the apartment.
The participants
All five use an iPhone privately, anywhere from the iPhone 12 to the iPhone 14 Pro. As for smartwatches, some wear an Apple Watch or a fitness band, others don’t have one.
The eight devices
- Smartphone: Sonja immediately recognizes a smartphone with a good camera and thinks of a Leica camera.
- Fitness band: The testers guess a smartwatch or a fitness tracker for the wrist. A narrow display stands out.
- Earbuds: They feel a case with in-ear earbuds and compare it to AirPods. It feels heavier.
- Power bank: They don’t recognize it right away, and there’s no cable port to help them guess. In the end the word power bank comes up.
- Massage gun: Mike loves this kind of thing and suspects a massage device. He thinks it’s something you need all the time.
- Selfie stick: Several guess a selfie stick or a device for setting up your smartphone and filming.
- Mini tablet with stand: A tablet or an e-book reader, and someone knows it from work, where it’s used for documenting.
- Cordless screwdriver: It causes the most puzzlement. People guess a drill or a hair dryer. Nobody would have thought that Xiaomi makes a cordless screwdriver.
The price guesses
For the smartphone, the friends guessed between €800 and €1,500, one even at least €1,500. The price is €499 RRP. Everyone was amazed: it feels premium and seems like a good phone. With some of the other devices, too, the friends were amazed at how affordable they are. One said this would be a reason to try one out and switch, and she hadn’t known until now that Xiaomi makes devices like these.
Verdict
What became clear is that everyone was very surprised, on the one hand by everything Xiaomi makes, and on the other by the exceptionally good value for money Xiaomi offers on some devices. It made me smile that all the Apple users automatically think every smartphone costs at least €1,000.
