iOS 16 brings many new features. I picked out the best 14 and show them on the iPhone 14. All iPhones back to the iPhone 8 can update to iOS 16, so the tips also apply to the iPhone 14 Pro models and older devices. Ad: In the middle of the video there’s an ad block for the sponsor Casetify.

The 14 tips

  1. Customize the lock screen: While the phone is unlocked, press and hold the lock screen. There you can change the wallpaper (also with your own photos or the customizable emoji wallpaper), the clock style and widgets.
  2. Cut out subjects and people: Press and hold the subject in the photo until the outline lights up. You can then send it or save it separately in Photos as a PNG.
  3. Copy text from photos and videos: This works not only in photos but also in videos, and even with handwritten text.
  4. Transfer edits to other pictures: Tap the dots at the top right, “Copy Edits”, then select the photos and tap the three dots at the bottom right and “Paste Edits”.
  5. Image recognition: Under the “i” with the sparkle, alongside location and camera settings, you’ll see similar results from the internet, for example for a plant or an animal. That’s handy if you want to know which plant or animal it is.
  6. Clean up duplicates: In the Photos app, at the very bottom under “Utilities”, you’ll find the duplicates, 518 in my case. Select all and merge, and the app keeps the photo or video with the best quality. That also cleans up your cloud storage.
  7. Battery level in percent: Is finally shown now, too.
  8. Haptic feedback for the keyboard: Under Settings, Sounds and Haptics, Keyboard Feedback, you can turn on the vibration. I really like that on Android.
  9. Unsend and edit iMessage messages: Press and hold the sent message. I find editing afterward particularly spectacular.
  10. Medications in the Health app: Under “Browse” and “Medications”, you add medications with a name and picture, get reminded to take them and mark them as done. A log is created as well. That will surely help many people.
  11. Search on the home screen: You jump straight into search without swiping down. The search covers mail, messages, apps and the web.
  12. Configure sound recognition yourself: Under Accessibility, the iPhone recognizes things like dog barking, sirens, smoke alarms or household appliances. Now you can define your own sounds, such as the doorbell. For people with limited hearing, that can be a game changer.
  13. Multiple stops in Apple Maps: You can now add multiple stops to a route. Otherwise I use Google Maps.
  14. Quick Notes: For me the most practical new feature. Via Share and “Add to Quick Note”, web pages, screenshots, photos or messages end up in the Notes app. Before, a web page got lost among the screenshots or cluttered the home screen.

Verdict

I find Quick Notes, cleaning up duplicates and the medication reminder particularly useful. Which tip you like best is up to you.
