iPhone 13 in pink: unboxing and comparison with the iPhone 13 Pro
Verdict in brief
The iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro differ in battery life and camera, otherwise they are very similar. If you need neither the Pro video recording, nor the huge battery life, nor a terabyte of storage, the iPhone 13 is a good choice.
Pros
- Cinematic mode in the regular iPhone 13 too
- Pink looks great, and no fingerprints show on the glass back
- Notch 20 percent smaller
- Same water and dust protection as the Pro (IP68)
Cons
- No macro function like the Pro
- Only two cameras instead of three
- No touch sensor, unlocking with a mask is awkward
- Lightning instead of a USB-C port
- Aluminum frame more vulnerable than stainless steel
I bought the iPhone 13 in pink with 128 GB. Because my channel does not consist only of Samsung devices, I am unboxing it and seeing whether it could replace my Galaxy Z Flip 3 as my daily driver. The comparison with the iPhone 13 Pro is meant to help you decide whether you want the regular or the Pro model. As always, I bought the iPhone myself, Apple does not sponsor me. These are first impressions.
Unboxing: pink and aluminum frame
I chose pink because I wanted something fresher. Anyone can do black, silver and red. I think the color looks great and not too girly. Depending on the light, it looks cream or pink, the aluminum frame is definitely pink and reminds me a little of the rose gold of the iPhone 6 series.
This time, Apple skips the film stuff. There is a paper strip on the front, which I like. The aluminum frame is more vulnerable than the stainless steel frame of the Pro models, which is why most people use a case. I chose it deliberately: I do not like the fingerprints on the stainless steel frame, and after my Galaxy Z Flip 3 I am spoiled in that respect. The glass back of the iPhone 13 does not shine like on the Pro, so you hardly see any fingerprints on pink and silver. On the black and dark blue models, on the other hand, you see them immediately.
The design and the display
The iPhone 13 has a 6.1-inch OLED display. The notch is said to be 20 percent smaller than on its predecessors, which from my point of view is quite a lot. It is still there because Face ID has a 3D sensor that cannot simply be built in under the display.
I think it is a shame that Apple again does not include a touch sensor, on the display or in the power button, as Samsung and many others do. We have been living in a pandemic for almost two years, in which you often wear a mask, and an additional unlock method would be helpful there. Apple points to unlocking with the Apple Watch, but for that you have to wear one.
The design has not changed much from its predecessor: flat edges, round corners. You can only recognize the iPhone 13 by the arrangement of the cameras.
iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro compared
| iPhone 13 | iPhone 13 Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Cameras | two | three |
| Macro function for photos | no | yes |
| Video playback according to Apple | up to 19 hours | up to 22 hours (Pro Max: 28 hours) |
| Frame | aluminum | stainless steel |
| Protection | IP68 | IP68 |
- Cinematic mode: I think it is great that Apple built it into the regular iPhone 13 too. I am especially looking forward to that, because I have missed it on an iPhone so far.
- Camera: The Pro has the macro function for photos. If you buy the regular model, you have to make a sacrifice here, which I think is a shame. The Pro also has a special video recording mode, which probably does not make sense for mere mortals who are not shooting feature films with it.
- Storage: The Pro goes up to 1 TB.
- Port: Here too, there is a Lightning port instead of USB-C, which is a shame. The new iPad mini, for example, has USB-C.
In summary: the differences are in battery life and camera, otherwise the devices are very similar. If you do not need the Pro video recording, the huge battery life or a terabyte of storage, you are very well advised with the iPhone 13.
Setup
Setting up is so incredibly unspectacular that I will not take you along for it. You enter your Apple ID and copy everything from the old iPhone. A long-term review will follow later.
