How do you set up the Huawei eKit AR180 router?

From a video by Jen from Shown with: Huawei eKit AR180

Huawei Smart Home & Household

In short

Connect the router to the modem and a laptop, enter the default IP address from the label in a browser, create a user, and set up Wi-Fi and internet access on the central configuration page.

Step by step

  1. Plug the WAN cable from the modem into the red 2.5-gigabit port.
  2. Connect the laptop to a LAN port with a patch cable and plug in the power.
  3. Wait about a minute for the router to boot.
  4. Open a browser and enter the default IP address. It is printed on the label on the underside of the device.
  5. Confirm the security warning with "Advanced, proceed anyway". It is normal on first start.
  6. During user registration, set a username and a password of at least twelve characters with letters, numbers and special characters. Then log in with these details.
  7. Decide whether to enable automatic firmware updates. Click "Next" on the overview page.
  8. Choose between cloud management and local management. Local management manages directly in the network without a cloud account and suits a small business with one location. Then choose cascading or stand-alone.
  9. On the central configuration page, set a password for network management and write it down.
  10. Set up the Wi-Fi: country code Germany, name and password, switch on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and leave RF Integration enabled.
  11. For the internet connection, select the red 2.5-gigabit port. As the mode, use PPPoE for classic DSL, DHCP with an upstream modem or fiber, or a static IP for business connections.
  12. Click "Apply" and wait about 20 to 30 seconds for the success message.

Jen sets up the router with the wizard. For DSL, the PPPoE mode asks for your login details. Every new device on the network will need the network management password later, so write it down.

At the “AP Approval Free” option, Jen turns the function off. New access points then have to be approved manually. She explains this as putting security before convenience. At the cascading or stand-alone step, she chooses cascading because she wants to add access points later; that only works with Huawei hardware. Jen points out that you need to know what you are entering on the configuration page.
