Verdict in brief

The Huawei eKit AR180 can be set up in under 10 minutes if you know what you want to do with the network. Jen recommends the eKit solution for small offices, freelancers, medical practices, workshops and cafés without an IT admin.

Pros

  • Setup from unboxing to Wi-Fi in under 10 minutes
  • Fanless and silent
  • AI diagnostics finds problems such as a loose cable
  • Manages up to 8 access points and up to 100 devices
  • Application Control to block, prioritize and limit applications

Cons

  • Setup doesn't work with no prior knowledge at all, you need to know what you are entering
  • Central management of further devices only works with Huawei hardware

Many small and medium-sized businesses use a simple Wi-Fi router and hit limits with it, for example when several workstations or meeting points in different rooms have to be covered. Network security is often a black box, and an external service provider for configuration and maintenance can cost a fortune. Huawei developed the eKit series for exactly that: enterprise features in a mini format for under €100. I am testing the eKit AR180 router and checking whether setup and maintenance really are simple and quick.

What’s in the box and ports

The box contains the router, the power adapter and a quick start guide. On the outside, four large antennas stand out, and there is a status LED on the front. The router is fanless and therefore silent in operation, a plus for the office and the meeting room. On the back there are five Ethernet ports:

  • Far right, red, 2.5 gigabit: the WAN port for the internet connection. With connections above 1 gigabit, this is where you get the full bandwidth.
  • Four gigabit LAN ports: Each can be reconfigured as a second WAN port, for example for a backup line via LTE. If the main connection fails, the backup takes over seamlessly.
  • Far left, Turbo port: The router automatically prioritizes devices on this port, such as a cash register PC, server, voice-over-IP system, video conferencing or laptop.

Setup step by step

  1. Plug the WAN cable from the modem into the red 2.5-gigabit port, plug a patch cable from the laptop into a LAN port, connect power. Wait about a minute until the router has booted up.
  2. Enter the default IP address in the browser. It is on the sticker under the device. The security warning on first start is normal: “Advanced, continue anyway”.
  3. Set a username and a decent password, at least twelve characters with letters, numbers and special characters. This is the front door to the network. Then log in with those details. Huawei asks whether automatic firmware updates should be enabled, and I agreed.
  4. On the “View entire network” overview page, all eKit devices appear. Devices you buy later show up there automatically.
  5. Cloud or local management: Cloud means worldwide access, but with a Huawei account and a connection to the Huawei cloud. Local means management directly in the network without a cloud account. For a small business with one location, local fits.
  6. Cascading or stand-alone: With cascading, the AR180 manages further eKit devices centrally, only with Huawei hardware. Stand-alone is more flexible, but without central management. I chose cascading because I want to add access points later.
  7. Central configuration page: Three things in one go.
    • Entire Network Management: one password for central management. Be sure to write it down, without it no new device will get into the network later.
    • Wireless Configuration: I turned off “AP Approval Free” so that new access points have to be approved manually. Security comes before convenience. Set Germany as the country code, set the SSID and Wi-Fi password, turn on 2.4 and 5 GHz and activate RF Integration. That way everything runs under one name, and the router automatically distributes devices to the suitable band.
    • Egress Configuration: internet access via the red 2.5-gigabit port. Choose PPPoE as the mode for classic DSL with login details, DHCP if a modem is connected upstream, or static IP for business connections. For me it is DHCP for fiber.
  8. Click “Apply”. After 20 to 30 seconds the success message appears. Router online, Wi-Fi up, management password set.

When I test with the smartphone on the Wi-Fi, the speed test shows exactly what my connection delivers. The router doesn’t limit anything, I get the full bandwidth.

The dashboard

There are four main areas: Dashboard, Configuration, Monitoring and System. The dashboard shows the network, device info such as model, serial number and IP address, and the traffic statistics of the WAN interface. Under Configuration you find the network planning, with which you can plan the network before the hardware even arrives, as well as Device List, Wireless Management, Templates and IPTV. Monitoring shows all active devices and the alarms. Under System are Login Management, firmware updates, network tools and AI Troubleshooting. The dashboard can also be viewed through the eKit app.

AI Troubleshooting

The AI diagnostics automatically checks egress, wired connections, Wi-Fi and the device itself, over 20 individual checks in total. One item stood out for me: over the last three days the connection on one port had dropped several times. The router suggested checking the cable and plug or moving to a different port. And that is really true: on exactly that port I have a cable whose locking tab on the plug has broken off, and it really did slip out several times. The AR180 detected that live and reported it.

For small and medium-sized businesses, that is worth its weight in gold. You get a warning before something stops working, and you don’t first have to call the service provider and pay a lot of money to hear that a cable is broken. If you work with an external service provider, they can connect to the dashboard and keep an eye on the network remotely.

More features

  • Wi-Fi 7 in dual band, future-proof for everything still to come
  • Up to 8 access points: Additional access points in the storage room, meeting room or outdoor area run under one Wi-Fi name with automatic handover, managed from one interface.
  • Up to 100 devices at the same time, such as laptops, printers and smart whiteboards
  • Application Control: Up to 100 applications can be blocked, prioritized or limited in bandwidth, by time of day, day of the week or IP. Block TikTok during working hours, always give video conferences priority: two clicks.

Verdict

From unboxing to working Wi-Fi it takes less than 10 minutes. But you have to know what to enter on the configuration page, in other words what you want to do with the network. It doesn’t work with no prior knowledge at all. I find the interfaces clear and well structured, and the wizard guides you through the setup well.

The Huawei eKit solutions are a clear recommendation for small offices, freelancers, medical practices, workshops and cafés, anywhere a conventional Wi-Fi router reaches its limits and no IT admin is working. If there is an admin, they can manage the network remotely through the interface and save the travel time.

Questions and answers

How long does it take to set up the Huawei eKit AR180?
From unboxing to working Wi-Fi it takes less than 10 minutes. You should know what to enter on the configuration page, though.
Who is the Huawei eKit AR180 suitable for?
For small offices, freelancers, medical practices, workshops and cafés where a normal Wi-Fi router reaches its limits and no IT admin is working. An external admin can manage the network remotely through the interface.
How many access points and devices does the AR180 support?
The AR180 itself manages up to 8 access points and supports up to 100 devices at the same time. Everything runs under one Wi-Fi name.
Do I need a cloud account for the Huawei eKit AR180?
No. You can choose between cloud management with a Huawei account and local management. For a small business with one location, Jen says local management is just right.
