TCL TV & Home Cinema

Verdict in brief

With SQD Mini LED, the TCL C7L brings 100% BT.2020 color gamut coverage, somewhat more dimming zones and a newer panel. Despite the roughly €500 premium, Jen would go for the C7L. If you mainly want to save money, the C7K is still a good choice.

Pros

  • C7L: 100% BT.2020 color gamut coverage, purer colors
  • C7L: somewhat more dimming zones, better contrast and less blooming
  • Both: up to 3,000 nits HDR peak brightness, bright enough against daylight
  • Both: 144 Hz and 288 Hz VRR Game Accelerator
  • C7K: proven QD Mini LED technology at a much lower price

Cons

  • C7L: roughly €500 more expensive than the C7K
  • C7K: doesn't cover the BT.2020 color gamut completely

This year, TCL introduced a new TV with new SQD Mini LED technology, the C7L. I still have its predecessor, the C7K from last year, with QD Mini LED technology. Here I look at what’s new on the C7L and what the new technology does differently, so you can decide which of the two TVs is the right one for you.

Why Mini LED is an alternative to OLED

Until now, OLED was considered the ultimate in TVs, with the matching price tag. Especially in larger sizes from 70 inches, the price of OLED TVs rises massively and disproportionately. Mini LED has developed so rapidly that it comes close to the picture quality of OLED and in part even surpasses it, and at a much lower price. With the C7K, TCL already delivered a real bargain last year. That’s why I was curious about the further development.

Picture technology: QD Mini LED vs. SQD Mini LED

The most important difference lies in the picture technology. The C7K works with classic QD Mini LED. Quantum dots provide an extended color gamut, but don’t cover the complete BT.2020 standard. This standard defines what range of colors an Ultra HD TV, so 4K and 8K, should cover.

The C7L comes with SQD Mini LED, a combination of Super Quantum Dot and a spectrally pure color filter:

  • The Super Quantum Dot improves color precision by 69%.
  • The spectrally pure color filter extends the color gamut by another 33%.
  • Result: the C7L achieves 100% BT.2020 color gamut coverage, so the complete standard.

With movies, series and games, the colors on the C7L look noticeably purer and more differentiated, especially with vivid reds and greens, because nothing blends into each other anymore.

Dimming zones and contrast

In 75 inches, the C7K has up to 1,248 dimming zones, the C7L up to 1,352. That is a slightly noticeable, but not an immense difference. The larger C7L models even get 2,176 zones. The real advantage lies less in the number of zones than in the newer panel and in blooming control. More zones plus better system control mean more precise light control and therefore more contrast: dark areas of the picture stay darker, bright highlights stay sharply delineated, and the dreaded blooming, the brightening around bright objects on a dark background, is reduced further.

Both TVs are bright enough to hold their own against daylight. In my living room, there’s a huge window on the side. For gamers, the difference is minimal: the C7L scores more through the better overall picture than through response speed. In terms of sound, both are at a similar level that’s good for a TV. If you want the maximum home theater feel, you’ll add a soundbar anyway; for normal everyday use, the integrated system is completely sufficient on both. Both use Google TV with a huge selection of apps for streaming services, games and media libraries.

Price: a difference of roughly €500

Both models launched in 75 inches with the same RRP of €1,799. The C7K came out in 2025 and has since dropped in price. At the time of the video in August 2026, you can get the 75-inch at some retailers for roughly €1,000 to €1,100, sometimes just below that in promotions. The C7L is the newcomer; the series launched in spring 2026. There you’re at about €1,500 to €1,600, depending on retailer and promotion. The difference is about €500.

Verdict: who is which model worth it for?

If I had to buy a new TV now, I’d go straight for the C7L. €500 is a lot of money, but you get newer technology, and you don’t buy a new TV every year. The C7L is TCL’s entry model into the new SQD Mini LED world and thus the cheapest way to true 100 percent BT.2020 coverage.

  • C7L: for everyone who wants the cleanest color gamut, somewhat more dimming zones and the newer panel. As an affordable premium device, it is positioned for exactly that.
  • C7K: for everyone who is looking for a value bargain and can live with the somewhat smaller color gamut. It remains a solid, proven QD Mini LED model, but without the leap to SQD.
