IP68 and IP69 (protection ratings)
The IP rating tells you how well a device is protected against dust and water. IP68 means dust-tight and protected when submerged.
What does IP68 and IP69 (protection ratings) mean?
The first digit stands for dust and solid foreign objects, the second for water. A 6 in the first position means dust-tight. An 8 in the second position means protection during continuous submersion under conditions set by the manufacturer. IP69 is added when a device also withstands hot water at high pressure.
If there is an X instead of a digit, that part was not tested. Testing is done with fresh water in the lab. Salt water, soap, and chlorine are not covered, and the seals age.
The rating is therefore no free pass for the swimming pool. With many manufacturers, water damage is excluded from the warranty despite IP certification.
A general explanation of the term, not from a video. How it plays out on a specific device in everyday use is covered in the reviews below.
