Blood pressure measurement on the wrist

Some smartwatches measure blood pressure. Some have a small inflatable cuff in the strap for this, while others estimate the value from the pulse wave.

What does Blood pressure measurement on the wrist mean?

Watches with a cuff work on the same principle as an upper-arm measuring device: the strap inflates and measures the pressure directly.

Watches without a cuff use light sensors to evaluate how the pulse wave moves through the vessels. They have to be calibrated regularly against a conventional measuring device.

For reliable values, posture matters: sit still, with the wrist at heart level. Whether a watch is approved as a medical device differs depending on the model and country.

A general explanation of the term, not from a video. How it plays out on a specific device in everyday use is covered in the reviews below.
