Verdict in brief

The Google Pixel 6 Pro in Cloudy White impresses Jen in first impressions: a huge leap in design, feel and materials over the Pixel 4 and 5. The only criticism is the missing power adapter. The test with the camera and Android 12 follows later.

Pros

  • Huge leap in design, feel and material quality over the Pixel 4 and Pixel 5
  • Cloudy White with a silver aluminum frame looks elegant
  • Sits comfortably in the hand despite its size, also thanks to the rounded display edges
  • Paper instead of plastic film on the display

Cons

  • No power adapter included

The Google Pixel 6 Pro wasn’t that easy to get in the past days and weeks. With advertising and the announcement, Google made sure it sold out within a few days. I ordered it a week ago, and it arrived earlier than expected. I bought it myself, so this is my honest and personal opinion. This is a first impression, the detailed test follows later.

Color and unpacking

I had actually decided on the color Sorta Sunny. But because the device was so hard to get, I had time to look at pictures and videos, and then switched to Cloudy White after all. I’m glad, because it looks very nice and elegant. The color is a cream tone, and at the top you see a slight gray. A silver aluminum frame comes with it.

Google does without a plastic film, and there’s a paper protective film on the front. I think that’s very good. On the back, you only have to peel off the film.

What’s in the box

There’s not much in the box:

  • a USB-C to USB-C cable
  • a small adapter from USB-C to USB-A
  • a small, very thin user guide that looks really cute
  • a SIM pin

Google also follows the trend and leaves out a power adapter. I think that’s a real shame.

Design and feel

Overall, the device is very premium and beautiful. At first glance, it reminds me very strongly of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Shape and size are similar, and so is the weight. The display also has rounded edges, and the punch-hole camera sits at the top of the display. The feel is almost identical, I had a real déjà vu.

The large, slightly protruding camera module on the back is very prominent. When you hold the device in your hand, you have a small support point there that you can grip well. The design is completely different from the earlier Pixel models. The leap in feel, looks and material quality from the Pixel 4 and Pixel 5 to the Pixel 6 Pro is really enormous, an absolute quantum leap.

The buttons and ports:

  • on the right, relatively high up, the power button, with the volume buttons below it
  • at the bottom, the USB-C port and the two speakers
  • on the left, only the SIM card slot

The Pixel 6 Pro is a fairly large phone. If you come from an S21 Ultra or iPhone 12 Pro Max like me, the size won’t surprise you. Despite the size, I find it relatively light, and thanks to the rounded display edges it sits very comfortably in the hand.
