Galaxy Buds 2 unboxing: Olive, what's in the box and first impressions
Verdict in brief
The Galaxy Buds 2 are smaller and more discreet than the Galaxy Buds Pro. In the first test, the sound quality with clearly better bass convinced Jen, and she sees it on par with the AirPods Pro. Water protection is missing.
Pros
- Smaller and more discreet than the Galaxy Buds Pro
- Sound with clearly improved bass, rich and fun
- Active noise cancelling and six microphones
- Ear tips in different sizes included
Cons
- No water protection anymore, the Galaxy Buds Pro were still protected to IPX7
The devices from Samsung are here. The first one I unpack is the Galaxy Buds 2 in the color Olive. They are smaller and more discreet than the Galaxy Buds Pro. Their sound surprised me, finally there is proper bass. This article is a first impression, I’ll do the detailed test in the next few days.
Unpacking and what’s in the box
The package is relatively small, unpacking doesn’t take long. The Buds 2 have the deep green color I had already announced and come in a nice white sleeve. When you open it, you see the case in olive green.
In the box are:
- the Galaxy Buds 2 in the charging case
- a quick start guide and the usual paperwork
- a USB-C charging cable
- tips in different sizes, so everyone finds the right size for large and small ears
Shape and size
I put the Galaxy Buds Pro and the Galaxy Buds Live next to it for comparison. With the case, there aren’t any big differences. The Buds 2 case is a bit flatter than the Buds Pro case. The form factor of the earbuds, on the other hand, has changed noticeably: the Buds 2 already look smaller and more discreet at first glance than the Buds Pro. I’m curious how the new shape sits in my ear and which of the three generations ends up as my favorite.
Technical details and sound
- Weight: According to Samsung, the earbuds weigh 5 grams each.
- Microphones and noise cancelling: The Buds 2 have six microphones in total and active noise cancelling.
- Water protection: The Galaxy Buds Pro were still protected to IPX7. Unfortunately, the Buds 2 drop this feature.
In my first tests, I noticed that the sound quality has improved noticeably compared with the predecessor, especially in the bass. The sound is really nice and rich, and it’s really fun to listen to music with them this time. In my opinion, the sound quality is quite comparable to the Apple AirPods Pro.
Verdict
I’ll use the next few days to test the Galaxy Buds 2 in detail. The first impression is good: smaller, more discreet and with more bass than the predecessors, but without water protection. Next up, I’ll unpack the Galaxy Z Flip3.
