AI Tutorial for Smartphone and Tablet: The AI Features You Can Use on Android
Verdict in brief
Android AI features can be divided into four categories: assistance, productivity, photo editing and creativity. Jen uses Gemini and Circle to Search the most, and finds AI writing and translation in the notes app especially useful.
Every new smartphone, tablet and really every new tech device has KI or AI written all over it. Manufacturers are betting everything on the AI card, we consumers pay for it, and most people still don’t really know what to do with the topic. The most important thing first: KI stands for künstliche Intelligenz, AI for artificial intelligence. So AI is simply the English term and can be used interchangeably. Here I show what my Xiaomi 15 offers with Hyper AI, Xiaomi’s AI model, and what’s worth using.
All AI features on Android smartphones can be divided into four categories: assistance, productivity, photo editing and creativity.
1. Assistance: Gemini and Circle to Search
Many current Android smartphones have Google’s Gemini, the new voice assistant that has sent Google Assistant into retirement. Most of the time you activate it with a swipe from the bottom right corner of the screen. Gemini can, for example:
- answer questions, such as explaining the offside rule
- solve math problems
- create a workout plan and a matching meal plan
- search for restaurants and add an appointment to the calendar
- create calendar entries from a complex email with several dates, locations and times, because Gemini can work with whatever is currently on the display
Gemini is a wonderful assistant. You have to get into it, look for tasks for it and get used to using it regularly. I hardly google anymore and just talk to Gemini directly.
The same goes for Circle to Search: You press and hold the bottom edge of the screen, circle what you see on the screen and get the results. I use that every day.
2. Productivity: AI writing, transcripts and translation
- AI Writing: In the Xiaomi Notes app, you tap the Hyper AI icon and enter a prompt, such as a speech, a fitness plan or a checklist for a trip. Texts you’ve written yourself can be summarized or put into a particular style of language. That’s great for anyone who struggles with written language and takes a long time over an email.
- Meeting notes: I take notes with the pen in meetings on the Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro. Afterwards I summarize them into the most important points or turn brief bullet points into full sentences with the expansion. As a third option, the text can be translated right in the app. For anyone who has to keep meeting notes, it’s useful and saves time.
- Transcripts: For important appointments, you can create entire transcripts. The AI even recognizes the different speakers. The transcript can be summarized or translated.
- Translating calls: During a call, you go to the toolbox and set the language. You hear everything in German, and the person you’re talking to hears their language. If you want to book a table by phone in Paris without speaking French, you can try it this way. It only works as well as AI can currently translate speech. No risk, no fun.
Smartphone and tablet working together
Xiaomi has really good interconnectivity between its devices:
- Copied text or an image from the Xiaomi 15 can be pasted on the tablet and vice versa, because the clipboard is synced.
- You can fully mirror the Xiaomi 15 onto the Pad 7 Pro and control it from there. Images and files move from one device to the other by drag and drop. That way you can use the smartphone without picking it up, for example watching YouTube or answering WhatsApp on the side during a video conference. Better to switch it off before screen sharing in the presentation.
3. Photo editing
This works on the Xiaomi 15 or the Pad 7 Pro. I love the Leica cameras of the Xiaomi smartphones.
- AI Erase Pro: It removes objects, lines and even people from photos. That works really well. Sometimes the AI conjures up something else, which you can then remove again. For an iron bar in the background, it suggested a cast-iron coffee pot to me.
- Removing reflections: for example, when you’ve photographed through a window.
- AI Image Expansion: The AI extends an image. If you took a photo in 4:3 and want to post it in 9:16, you don’t have to zoom in wildly. For social media, that’s brilliant.
4. Creativity
On the Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro, I draw a sketch, choose the AI marker, circle it, choose a style, add a description and can even add a reference photo. Then a result is created from my doodle. For me, the use cases are rather limited, but maybe you have ideas.
A highlight for me: On the Xiaomi 15, I have the AI create a short film. The footage is cut automatically and music is added. With a description, the AI picks a fitting filter, edit and music. That quickly creates Reels for Instagram or a summary of the last vacation.
Verdict
Of the four categories, I use assistance the most, especially Gemini and Circle to Search. For work and everyday life, I find AI writing, transcripts and translation especially useful. Photo editing and short films save me time, and in creativity I’ve seen few uses so far.
